January 20, 2011 – What A Day for News
I’ve been running this site for a few years now, and I have to say that for whatever reason today was just a really wild day for news. Not to get too ‘inside baseball’, but every morning I typically do my main round of updates. Usually there are a number of really interesting stories that make it on to the home page, and of those stories, typically The Most really leaps out. But today was different.
Any one of these stories could easily have been the Most were it not for today having so many other strong stories.
GOP Led Congress Votes to Repeal Health Care Law We’ll be hearing about this story for the next two years in some fashion or another. While this vote was not a surprise, and the result of the vote was very expected, none the less, this is easily a Most.
More Than 100 US Mobsters Arrested in ‘Largest Mafia Round-Up in History’. Strong government. Weak mob. 100 plus arrests. Definitely a Most.
Giffords Stands with Assistance, May Move to Rehab Center Friday. Huge story. Probably will be the story of the year as we head wrap up the year. Hopefully we don’t have another tragedy like this anytime soon. Typical day, a nice piece of news would easily be the Most. Maybe tomorrow though…
‘House of Horrors’ Alleged at Philadelphia Abortion Clinic. This story is absolutely horrible. If you have not read it yet, you should. How this man could be a practicing doctor is beyond me. This should be a Most, and maybe as more details emerge it will eventually become one. Another day, definitely the Most, and a grizzly one at that.
U.S. Prepares to Lift Ban on Guantánamo Cases. Another huge story. This was a center piece of Obama’s presidential run. Now that he’s heading towards the middle and in re-election mode… Should be a Most. Despite that, given the rest of the news today, this story didn’t even make it to the top of a column.
Woman Abducted as Infant in 1987 Meets Family. This is another really nice story. I suspect heading into the weekend this story will continue to pick up heat. Could be a Most yet!
Larry Page to Take Over As CEO of Google, Eric Schmidt to Become Executive Chairman. While more in the realm of technology, my eyes nearly fell out of my head when I read this one. Huge! Actually is a Most in the Technology section.
So, there you have it. What an exciting news day. Sorry, I just had to share all this as again, for whatever reason, today seemed to be filled with all kinds of really big stories. I will say one thing about today, while there were some really big stories that broke today, at least some of them firmly sat in the ‘good news’ category! A few more of those, and few less of the other kind would be my preference. We’ll see what tomorrow brings in…
